Super Bowl XL Festivities - Downtown Detroit

So, we decided to do it. We are going to go pick up Jason on Saturday and head downtown to attend all the superbowl festivities. First, I should say for those who don't live here, the only bad parts of the city are the parts outside of downtown - where the residents don't take care of their properties etc. Also ALL OF Detroit is NOT like it is portrayed in the movies. Yeah 8 mile & 7 Mile are bad, but that is only a couple parts of the city.

Downtown is AWESOME there are really cool casinos like the MGM Grand and Greektown. There is also the FOX Theatre and DIA. The main reason we didn't know if we wanted to go was the traffic - well there are shuttles all over town that cost 2$ per person to go anywhere you want.

So we are going to do take my mom downtown and show her:

Winterfest - where there is a snow slide, free ice skating sponsored by Ford, Tons of really huge ice sculptures, and my personal favorite - Sled Dog Races, featuring the dad of our pup Booker. These take place all day. And a TASTE OF DETROIT.

The American Online NFL experience At COBO: - this is a 800,000 sq ft facility of nothing but football praphenalia and famous people. Technicaly, they are calling it a "THEME PARK" we will see about that.

I will be taking lots of pictures - so look forward to those.

The Ren Cen is a good place to spot Celebs for free and indoors.

Of course, we have to be in Boston the first time anything really cool takes place in Detroit. Go figure! Just an FYI...my dad read that the NFL has purchased 10000 parking places (yes, 10,000!!) from WSU for the super bowl...Traffic will be a bitch so be careful. My recommendation...find out if they are running buses from Fairlane mall and park there!!! Avoid downtown parking at all costs.

One more thing...Downtown isn't all that safe either...don't let the hype fool you. Everytime Eddie or Greg and I have gone downtown we have been a bit nervous...and amazed at some of the strange things we have seen.

They have shuttles from 6 different places, one of the places is the detroit zoo. We are parking there, there is NO WHERE to park downtown -but it is cool because the host committee thought of everything, there are maps and everything that tell you where you can pick up a shuttles, where the comfort zones are (food water and heat) and all the paths you would want to take. I listen to Mitch Albom and Paul W. Smith on 760 WJR and they are saying that if you are in the middle of winterfest and cobo SECURITY will not be an issue. Last night was the first night of all the festivities and they said that it was like being in New York because there are so many people and all the new restaurants are opened. All I am taking is my license and camera. I can't wait.
